Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) has significantly enhanced its naval capabilities with the commissioning of powerful new ships and the innovative use of container ships for missile launches. The IRGCN’s latest additions include vessels like the Shahid Hassan Bagheri, equipped with advanced armaments and extended endurance, capable of projecting Iranian power well beyond the Persian Gulf.
In January 2024, Iran successfully tested the launch of Fateh-class ballistic missiles from the deck of a container ship, the Shahid Mahdavi. This test involved launching two Fateh-110 missiles, with a range of 200 to 500 kilometers, from cargo containers. This capability represents a significant boost in Iran’s naval strike effectiveness, allowing the IRGCN to launch missiles from unexpected locations, forcing adversaries to reassess their air defense strategies.
The use of container ships like the Shahid Mahdavi for missile launches provides several advantages. Container ships are more resilient than traditional warships, as demonstrated by historical incidents such as the 1987 Bridgeton Incident. During this event, the Bridgeton, a merchant vessel, struck a sea mine but continued to lead a convoy safely through a minefield, showcasing its durability compared to military vessels like the USS Samuel Roberts, which was heavily damaged by a similar mine.

A good idea.
