I thought we could probably do with a dedicated thread for this.
It's just been announced that the review will be headed by former Nato Secretary General Lord Robertson, supported by former US presidential advisor Fiona Hill and former Joint Force Commander Gen Sir Richard Barrons.
One of Robertson's first statements was that “We’re confronted by a deadly quartet of nations increasingly working together,” (China, Russia, Iran and North Korea) and that Britain and its Nato allies have “got to be able to confront that particular quartet.” This struck me as interesting against the backdrop of statements made by John Healey in opposition, when he seemed to reject any possibility of a Pacific Tilt and seemed to suggest a more rigorous focus on our own back yard - apparently oblivious to the fact that our military commitment in that area remains tiny but brings huge benefits.
Healey added that the Review would “consider the threats we face, the capabilities we need, the state of our armed forces and also the resources available”.
Of course, one way to square the circle with the resources available would be to reduce commitments. We'll need to watch this space.
