I'm re-reading the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series and have started with Red Storm Rising and The Hunt for Red October, both of which have various depictions of US battleships and surface warfare groups (e.g. New Jersey) and Russian Kirov class, and lots of tidbits of varying factual reality.
One issue that does arise is the tactics for the New Jersey group shadowing the Kirov group, before any possible outright hostilities commence.
What was the doctrine for this situation - where to position yourself relative to a likely-to-shortly-be-hostile naval enemy in:
A) WW2 and
B) 1980s surface warfare groups centered around an Iowa class
Bonus question: did this situation ever arise with battleships (both freely maneuvering) in history? I guess the British and French at Mers El Kébir half classifies...
