Both the USN and the RN started WW2 with 15 “old” capital ships. By 1945, the RN had lost 4 (Barham, Royal Oak, Hood, Repulse) while the USN lost 2 (Arizona & Oklahoma). However, the RN only had 2 ships (Nelson and Renown) still in service (+Royal Sovereign in Soviet service) while the USN was still operating all of their remaining vessels.
Many of the RN vessels were deactivated despite lack of battle damage as being “worn out.” Granted the RN had 2 extra war years and the UK was much more heavily affected by the war, but what were the specific causes of this difference between the two navies? Was it design differences? Refit schedules? Rebuilds? Training? Fuel? Manpower?
