The Politics Of War • Electoral earthquake in Germany

Maybe not yet the Big One, but a good 6 on the Richter scale.  Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD) won the statewide elections in Thuringis, and effectively tied for first in Saxony.  Meanwhile, Scholz' SDP barely scraped over the 5% threshhold required to be included at all.

Thuringia:

Alternative for Germany (AfD) 34.33 32 +10
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) 33.48 23 +2
Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW)  12.40  15 New
The Left (Die Linke) 15.16  12 –17
Social Democratic Party (SPD)  7.78  6 –2
Alliance 90/The Greens (Grüne) 1.61  0 –5
Free Democratic Party (FDP) 1.57  0 –5

Saxony

Christian Democratic Union 34.43  41 -3
Alternative for Germany  33.96  40 +3
Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht  6.34  15 New
Social Democratic Party  6.17  10 -1
Alliance 90/The Greens  5.09  7 -6
The Left 6.38  6 -8
Free Voters  4.83  1 +1

Overall, left leaning parties (SDP, Die Linke, Die Grüne) were massacred, whereas in addition to FDP's performance, the center-right CDU roughly held its own and the new "socialist conservative" BSW made surprisingly credible maiden showings.

Naturally, the SDP/CDU Uniparty and the rest of the Establishment are falling all over themselves to keep AfD out of government, just as happened electorally in France and parliamentarily - for a while - in the Netherlands. But I think the writing is on the wall.
