I hope you guys have fun with this one!
The good idea fairy has made a presentation to the USN and received funding for the Micro Escort program.
Program Overview:
1. A micro combatant with the purpose providing a no-frills, extremely small and cheap surface combatant capable of escorting merchant shipping from the Suez Canal south past the Somali coast and east to the Strait of Hormuz. They may also be tasked to escort warships through the Strait of Hormuz. Expected threats are Helicopters, USV, small pirate watercraft and slow UAV. This combatant will always operate in conjunction with other assets providing AAW capability.
2. A tender vessel capable of supporting I level maintenance of micro combatants in locations with no port or repair facilities.
3. State Department is working with regional partners and security professionals to identify appropriate locations on the African East coast, Arabian Peninsula and islands to act as host for the tenders and micro combatants. We expect at least four locations to be approved.
4. Any concerns about this program being a "bad or stupid idea" may be referred to the Office of the Naval Good Idea Fairy for proper adjudication.
Minimum requirements:
Micro combatants will meet the following requirements:
1. Main battery no larger than 25mm.
2. Endurance of 1 week. Including food, fuel, sanitation and accommodations.
3. Missile weapons limited to man portable systems.
4. Navigation RADAR. Surface search RADAR if possible.
5. Encrypted systems limited to the minimum required to coordinate with surface and aviation assets.
Tender vessels will meet the following requirements:
(May use different classes for maintenance functions)
1. Must be capable of conducting at least I-Level maintenance functions with organic assets.
2. Must be capable of accommodating the crew of at least eight micro combatants simultaneously between operations.
3. Must be capable of maintaining sufficient stores, potable water, repair parts, petroleum products and fuel to support eight micro combatants for minimum of one month.
8. Must be capable of providing electrical power and ships service air to eight micro combatants simultaneously to support maintenance functions.
4. Must be capable of providing local shore and harbor side security as necessary.
5. Must be capable of moving under its own power.
6. Strong preference for a design that includes capability to remove one micro combatant completely from the water for maintenance.
Repurposing of decommissioned assets are authorized.
