Trent Hone & Jon Parshall have together or separately written, talked, etc about how the night battles of Guadalcanal taught or retaught the USN how to fight surface actions so by late 1943, the USN “knew how to fight at night.”
Except that Adm Lee who is historically considered the USN surface action expert declines engaging at night in June 1944 because of “insufficient night training” while Oldendorf accepts night battle just 4 months later.
This gets glossed over exceedingly quickly. Either the USN became a night capable force or it wasn’t . And refusing battle at Philippine Sea is a big wasn’t.
Something doesn’t match up.
Can I now save money on at least 2 books?
