I was browsing Conways’ the other day and came across a statement I’ve seen many times – the RN’s Minotaur armoured cruisers were overgunned and under armoured. Given that their record (and the record of armoured cruisers generally) typically consisted of running into ships they were incapable of fighting on anything like equal terms (e.g. Jutland, Falklands), how was this assessment reached? Couldn’t the same be said of any armoured cruiser that ran into dreadnoughts/battle cruisers.
Similarly, the Garibaldi class has a high reputation – based on what? Two saw action in the Russo-Japanese war, but so did half a dozen Elswick and pseudo-Elswick cruisers, wth equal success but who lack a similarly elevated reputation.
So my question is – how do ship classes acquire good/bad reputations?
Cheers,
Neil
