As many will already know I am now in the process of working through the technical files of the late Nathan Okun, who passed away in December. Indexing, cataloging, and in some cases re-distributing this material represents a task that will take many weeks, and likely months, to complete. But it will be done.
As part of the process of wrapping up Mr. Okun's activities, I would very much like to provide users practical access to some of the programs, such as the well-known "Facehard" series insofar as their results have become imbedded in many secondary sources over the last forty years or so.
In that regard, i was somewhat taken aback to find that the programs as listed in the Okun resource page in this forum appear to be, in practical terms, inaccessible to normal users. There was a time when many users could use old DOS commands and run programs written in BASIC fairly fluently. And, they likely still had a computer that could perhaps be coaxed one way or another into running them in some sort of emulation mode. But those days are gone forever, and as computers continue to become more sophisticated, it's likely that in a few years only a very small set of potential users could even begin to make use of them.
I'm running a rather conventional, but fairly new Windows computer, and cannot seem to manage to run them at all. I could still run these programs on my previous machine, admittedly after the application of some fairly complicated keyboard gymnastics, but not any more.
In that regard, I'm wondering if any users of this forum have Windows-compatible versions of these programs already up and running, or would be willing to put a little time in to reworking the programs so that they can easily be run on more modern systems. These programs, like his books and papers, form part of his legacy, and it would certainly be disappointing to see them disappear from the historical record, or simply die because nobody can effectively run them anymore.
Anybody interested in this?
