House approves bill on TikTok that would force sale or effectively ban company

WASHINGTON – The House approved a bill Wednesday that would force TikTok’s parent company to sell the juggernaut social media app or face a practical ban in the U.S.
President Joe Biden has said he would sign it if it makes it to his desk, but the legislation’s fate is uncertain in the Senate, where the bill has proved much more divisive. The bill cleared the House with strong bipartisan support, 352 to 65, with one member voting present.

I don't use or watch TikTok, so I have no real stake in this issue. However, there are certainly some 1st Amendment freedom of speech and international trade issues involved if a social media platform is effectively banned just because it is owned by a foreign government. If national security is the real concern, Congress should spell those reasons out instead of making vague claims of potential threats. If they can ban TikTok, they can ban any other social media platform. Plus China will certainly retaliate by banning American companies from its market.
I find it amusing that Trump is against the ban, not because of any freedom of speech issues, but because he says it will increase Facebook's (and Zuckerberg's) business. Looks like he would rather see the money going to China than America.
