So - there has been a real and measurable increase in minor offences such as illegal entry +/-robbery and car stealing. On a yearly basis reported crime is up 5-9% but locally Qld and NSW have figures like +10% to +22% and in individual towns and suburbs I suspect it can be much worse.

Crime rates reported are up much more than crime rates prosecuted, which suggests police and prosecutors are not acting on many small property crimes. Youth crime rates are up, and more than ever these involve causing physical harm, which then suggests this is becoming the threshold for prosecution.

This impacted the recent Qld by elections (very high swings) and may be a factor in the upcoming Qld state election and may even bleed through into Federal voting.

NSW new labour leader is aware of the political risks, and has new legislation stiffening bail requirements for youths where there is a risk of re offence, as well as tougher sentences if you post your crimes on social media.

This of course upsets the legal fraternity and it will have major impacts on indigenous rates of incarceration.
