A curious thought crossed my mind earlier while reading another post about the 4 Hoods being completed.
Along the lines of:
'...follow-on strikes would have killed her because her speed and maneuverability were fatally compromised (Illustrious had no rudder control and was steering by varied propellor thrust at low speeds) making her a sitting duck for torpedoes and dive bombers especially since she couldn't operate aircraft...'
posted by AZrailwhale about HMS Illustrious.
Wouldn't it be more beneficial to go full ahead on all engines and steer an erratic course due to no rudder?
Never understood why Bismark didn't do this when KGV and gang where detected instead of just pottering along at 12ish knots. (I realise own FC would suffer).
As I said I'm curious.
