The kriegsmarine seems to use two different models of quadruple 20mm AA mounts, flakverlimg c35 and C38. Anatomy of the ship indicated the C35 was a more sophisticated tri-axially stabilized mount, where as the C38 was described as a bi-axially stabilized mount. The C35 mount appeared substantially different from the wehrmacht’s land based 20mm flakverling, and appears to have been a special,t developed naval mount, which explain the 3 axis stabilization. The C38 mount however seems quite similar to the land based flakverling, suggesting it is basically a navalized version of the land mount.
My questions are:
1. Was the C38 really bi-axial stabilized? And was it really just a navalized version of the land mount? If it were a straight forward naval adaptation of the land mount, it probably wouldn’t Be stabilized because land based AA mounts didn;t need to be. Was it specially enhanced with bi-axial stabilization during naval adaptation?
2. It appears Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were equipped with the tri-axially stabilized C35 around the time of Operatoon Berlin in early 1941, but the Bismarck went to,sea slightly later with the simpler C38 mount. Why were the Bismarck given the seemingly less sophisticated mount?
3. It appears after 1941, all the newer 20mm verling mounts added to Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were of the simpler C38 variety. Why ere they not given the C35 mount?
