Would artillery/mortar crews have to adjust their aim slightly between each shot to cover a larger area or would they expect differences in wind speed/direction etc. to disperse their subsequent shots? I would imagine, under ideal conditions, every shot would land in exactly the same place, which would not be ideal for destroying a spread out attacking force (you don't want to just make the initial crater bigger with every follow on shot from your gun-unless it's a hard, fixed fortification perhaps).
