This photo was posted in one of the social media boards, it is interesting because one can ID the battleship in the background as one of the KONGO class around early 1920 or earlier. The area appears to be a Japanese port due to the nationality of the sailors in the foreground. The real question is what submarine is that in the foreground? One really interesting feature of this boat is there is a very deep cut in the deck before you reach the conning tower and also the conning tower does not appear to have any windows.
The sub appears small based on the size of the crewman onboard, so one is tempted to assume it is one of the IJN medium subs, but none of the medium boats of that period looks like that. So how about one of the larger boats? Well those tends to be built later and the early ones does not appear to fit.
