In July 2022, Tennessee’s legislature passed the “Truth in Sentencing” bill, which prohibited violent criminals from obtaining parole or early release until they have served their sentence.
At the time, the legislation’s co-sponsor, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville), said the bill would keep Tennesseans safer.
“The worst thing you can do is tell a family they’re going to get 10 years and you see them on the street in three years or less, which is happening right now,” Sexton said in July 2022.
The Department of Justice (DOP) recently reported a 14% decrease in the crime rate in Tennessee, following an 8% increase in the number of criminals behind bars in the state.
