The Australian Financial Review has published plenty of commentary on the qualifications of US president-elect Donald Trump’s nominees for cabinet positions (“Tariff hardliner, TV doctor for cabinet”). Perhaps this is a case of throwing stones from a glass house.
Consider the corresponding positions in Australia. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has no financial experience at all and has a PhD in political science – he was an ALP media adviser.
Defence Minister Richard Marles has no military background but was a lawyer and assistant secretary of the ACTU.
Health Minister Mark Butler is a law graduate and was South Australian secretary of the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union.
Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security Tony Burke has no background in security but is a law graduate and was an organiser for the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
The list goes on.”
